The RHODOS Migration Facility1

چکیده
This paper looks at the design, implemntation and performance of RHODOS’ process migration facility which reflects RHODOS’ aspiration to support both load balancing and parallel execution on a distributed system. Following the presentation of the design issues, which reflect the requirements of both load balancing and parallel execution on a distributed system, research into an initial implementation and testing of RHODOS’ process migration facility will be presented. Performance measurements of this initial implementation have also been taken and the results are reported in this paper. A comparison with several modern distributed operating systems show that already our migration facility compares favourably. 1. The Multiple Strategy Process Migration Manager for RHODOS: The Logical Design
This report details the research into different issues and design strategies that affect process migration. Instead of deciding that a particular strategy is best for the RHODOS system, a multiple strategy process migration manager is proposed. The research into the logical design of such a manager shows that each of the strategies can be used without any need to recompile. Hence this work will...
متن کاملCopy on Reference Process Migration in RHODOS
Process migration in the RHODOS operating system has been designed to utilise many different strategies and hence to allow their comparison. Copy On Reference is one strategy that can be employed to transfer the address space of the migrant process. This report details research into the design, implementation and performance of RHODOS’ Copy On Reference process migration. Emphasising our modula...
متن کاملPerformance Comparison of Process Migration with Remote Process Creation Mechanisms in RHQDOS
We claim in this paper that both remote process creation and process migration are ejj’icient mechanisms to be used in the improvement or development of high performance computer systems. In particulal; we demonstrate that the claims made by some researchers that process migration is too heavy to be used to support dynamic load balancing are unsubstantiated. We support our claim by presenting t...
متن کاملGlobal Scheduling on Clusters of Workstations: Development and Performance Study*
The ability to fully utilise the computational resources of a cluster of workstations (COW) through the initial placement and movement of workload is desirable not only by the user of the system, but also from an efficiency point of view since the modern COWs are an expensive resource. The ability to have an even spread of load over an entire COW can be achieved through the employment of Global...
متن کاملLoop parallelisation using a simple parallelising compiler with the RHODOS distributed system
The procedure of parallelising a sequential task can be very difficult and even with considerable experience in the area of parallelisation, it can still be quite monotonous. Automation of parallelisation through using a parallelising compiler is often an advantageous path to pursue due to the savings in both time and effort. A major component of automatic parallelisation is loop parallelisatio...
